Being a woman, you might have never given it any thought, but don’t you think it’s strange you don’t see many child changing tables in men’s bathrooms? Most of the times, you will only find a changing table in the women’s bathrooms, as if fathers must be excluded from changing their child in a public bathroom.
Donte Palmer, a father of three kids, had to face this fact yet again and decided that it needed to change. He took a picture of himself changing his son across his lap while squatting, because there was no other option.
He posted the picture on Instagram and said: “This is a serious post!!! What’s the deal with not having changing tables in men’s bathroom as if we don’t exist!! #FLM #fatherslivesmatter clearly we do this often because look how comfortable my son is. It’s routine to him!!!! Let’s fix this problem! I Kaepernick drop a knee to this issue! @theshaderoom let’s show the innovation of fathers! #squatforchange”
The Instagram post quickly went viral, because many fathers recognized this problem and shared their own experiences. On Fox News last Tuesday, Palmer said: “I’m fighting for all fathers. It’s one of those times where society portrays these gender roles, women are supposed to cook and clean and take care of the babies – but if I truly love my wife, let me serve her and help her.”
He created the hashtag #SquatforChange to create awareness and it seems to be helping already, as many people have posted their own pictures using this hashtag. Donte Palmer has become the new face of the BABIES Act in the United States. With this law, from 2016, changing tables in both men’s and women’s toilets were made mandatory in public buildings. The timing at which Palmer launched #SquatforChange seems on purpose, as the deadline for placing all changing tables is this week.
